Sulawesi Barat (disingkat Sulbar) adalah provinsi ke-33 dalam negara Indonesia yang dibentuk pada tahun 2004. Letak Sulawesi Barat di Pulau Sulawesi dengan garis lintang 00045’59” – 03034’00” Lintang Selatan dan 118048’59” – 119055’06” Bujur Timur. Perbatasan wilayah Sulawesi Barat yaitu Sulawesi Tengah di bagian utara, Sulawesi Selatan di bagian Timur dan Selatan dan Selat Makassar di bagian Barat. Pada tahun 2020, penduduk Sulawesi Barat berjumlah 1.419.229 jiwa dengan kepadatan 85,00 jiwa/km2.
Pembentukan provinsi Sulawesi Barat merupakan hasil pemekaran dari provinsi Sulawesi Selatan yang didasarkan pada Undang-Undang Nomor 26 Tahun 2004 yang disahkan oleh Presiden Republik Indonesia dan diresmikan oleh Menteri Dalam Negeri Republik Indonesia pada tanggal 5 Oktober 2004. Ibukota provinsi Sulawesi Barat adalah Kota Mamuju. Sulawesi Barat memiliki daratan dengan luas 16.937, 16 km2 dan lautan dengan luas 20.342 km2 serta pesisir pantai sepanjang 677 km. Jumlah kecamatan di Sulawesi barat sebanyak 69 dengan jumlah desa/kelurahan sebanyak 649.

Pada masa penjajahan, wilayah Celebes Bagian Barat adalah bagian dari 7 wilayah pemerintahan yang dikenal dengan nama Afdeling Mandar yang meliputi empat onder afdeling, yaitu:
- Onder Afdeling Majene beribu kota Majene;
- Onder Afdeling Mamuju beribu kota Mamuju;
- Onder Afdeling Polewali beribu kota Polewali;
- Onder Afdeling Mamasa beribu kota Mamasa.
Onder Afdeling Majene, Mamuju dan Polewali yang terletak di sepanjang garis pantai barat pulau Celebes mencakup 7 wilayah kerajaan (Kesatuan Hukum Adat) yang dikenal dengan nama Pitu Ba’bana Binanga (Tujuh Kerajaan di Muara Sungai) yang meliputi:
- Balanipa di Onder Afdeling Polewali (dipimpin oleh Ambo Caca Daeng Magasing);
- Binuang di Onder Afdeling Polewali;
- Sendana di Onder Afdeling Majene;
